CHARACTER NAME: Kurt Hummel
SERIES: Glee
CANON POINT: Post "The Break Up" (Episode 4 of Season 4)
LOSS: In Paradisa, Kurt will be unable to wear anything but his Dalton Academy Uniform.I couldn't bring myself to take away his singing. Kurt really prides himself on fashion, so not being able to express himself through that would be a problem for him. Furthermore, while being at Dalton was an escape from danger, it was hard for Kurt to be expected to blend in. Wearing that uniform will remind him of that, as well as of his time with Blaine.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER:
Kurt was born to Burt Hummel and a never-named-in-canon mother, who passed on when he was very young. He was, from an early age, a very effeminate boy. And as Kurt got older, being that different made life in Lima, Ohio difficult for Kurt. He identified as homosexual by the time he was a sophomore in high school, but was far from open about it. However, his personality and fashion sense was enough for many people to target him. See, Kurt can come across as very much a gay stereotype: He's into fashion (although also cars!) and acts shallow. He can be catty and downright rude when expressing his opinions, such as his critiques of Rachel's personality, and is snooty often. However, Kurt is more than just the gay stereotype. He's very clever and can be quite manipulative -- Such as when he introduces his father to Finn's mother to get closer to Finn, who he as a crush on. He can be jealous and try too hard to please others, such as when he tries to be "manly" to please his father... Which happens to be because he is jealous of the attention Finn is getting from Burt. He also vows to have Rachel kicked out of New Directions if she doesn't stop dating Jesse, which also shows a bit of cynicism, a he doesn't trust Jesse truly has feelings for Rachel. On the other hand, this could just be a lack of belief that anyone would be able to stand Rachel enough to like her romantically.
However, a lot of this changes with time. His father ends up marrying Finn's mother and, after a lot of tension, the two boys make peace and Kurt backs off. He develops a very positive and close relationship with his father, and eventually comes to befriend Rachel. But that last part comes later. We've got a LOT more of season one to look at first.
See, Kurt's got his positive traits, too. He's always willing to take the fall for someone he cares about, from slushie-ing himself in the face for Finn's reputation to throwing a note and losing his chances on a solo to not embarrass his father. He's very supportive of his friends, particularly seen with Mercedes. After some time in glee club, he's someone who is proud of who he is; someone who refuses to change except for once instance (detailed below) -- When he is about to be beaten by a couple of football players, he reminds them that he won't change. Kurt is ultimately someone strong and confident. He's got dreams of musical theatre and he refuses to give up on them.
At the start, though, Kurt has, in some ways, accepted things like being thrown into the dumpster every day -- So long as it doesn't ruin his favorite outfits. And this kind of lingers. Through-out the first season, he makes comments about the other students being out for the glee club's blood, and about the band club being forever unpopular. But the difference as time goes on is that Kurt isn't seeing himself as flawed, he's seeing the way others view him as flawed. There are two things that comfort Kurt when he is bullied. One is knowing that he cannot and will not be changed, as seen in the Lady Gaga episode. Another is the fact that he sees himself as above those who torment him, stating that, "You will all work for me one day.". He's a strong kid, all in all, as his dad points out to him in the episode Wheels.
More on Kurt's views of himself. The kid knows he has talent, shown by his complaints about not getting solos and just being in the background, going so far as to join the Cheerios so he will get solos. However, his audition number for Glee is Mr. Cellophane, a song about being looked right through. This fits Kurt in two ways: One, his true self is very clear even when he tries to pretend to be something else. (Tina and Rachel suspect he's gay before he comes out; when he tries to be 'macho' no one really believes it.) Additionally, though, before he joined glee club, Kurt felt he was unseen by others, or at least unseen as more than a target. Kurt is a person; not just a victim or even just a stereotype. He feels invisible. In one instance, though, he seems okay with this -- When glee club is to be left out of the yearbook. He rather not have the picture be vandalized, which he clearly believes will have far more serious consequences. He seeks courage, as well, which causes him to accept alcohol from April Rhodes.
Kurt has known his sexuality since he was five, but hid it until he was a sophomore in high school. This was to protect himself in a very homophobic community, but also probably both to protect his father from discomfort and ridicule and to protect their relationship, judging by his attempts at being "manly" to make them closer and his choice not to sing a song traditionally sung by a women because it might cause his dad more grief. However, at heart, Kurt seems quite comfortable with who he is, never trying to change himself -- except for to get his father's attention -- even though he did hide for a while. Kurt identifies as male but is an "honorary girl", at least in glee club. While Kurt doesn't feel female, he does have a strong feminine side, which can be seen in his way of dress or his stereotypically girly attitudes towards many things... Including boys.
Let's talk about Kurt and boys. When he falls, it is very hard and very easily. All Finn did was lightly reprimand Puck for pushing Kurt against a locker, and Finn held Kurt's heart ever since. Kurt was alarmingly forceful and sneaky in is attempts to win Finn over -- See the relationship between his father and Finn's mother, above -- and, as is seen clear when he and Finn have a fight over their now-shared bedroom, it is hard for him to accept the fact that Finn is straight. He makes comments to Finn at times about how girls are his problem and certain things are "enough to want to make you give up women all together.". He's flirtatious and he tends to stare dreamily at his crushes. He can come on far too strong. This is most obvious in "Home", where he pushes Burt and Finn's mother's relationship on Finn, trying to use music to convince him that having a new father will be a good thing.
Kurt is, in many ways, an extremely good guy. In Acafellas, he is completely there for a lonely Mercedes, and it leads to a very sweet and close friendship. He also is part of the plan to sing Lean On Me for Finn and Quinn, despite being jealous of Quinn and Finn's relationship. He puts his father above his desire for a solo. He even -- though he will gain some from it himself, in the form of a successful multimedia project -- offers to help Sue find a new look when she is clearly hurt by a dig Will makes about her hair. However, he soon after steals and watches Sue's music video to Olivia Newton-John's "Physical", laughing at it and being part of the group to put it on Youtube in a attempt to get a more badass reputation. He later performs in the library for the same reason, showing Kurt can have a mean streak and be rebellious for things he wants.
In Season Two, we still see much of the above, but we also see Kurt's compassionate side, as well as his courage. Early in the season, his dad has a heart attack. Through this, we learn that Kurt is an atheist, but we also see a lot more. He realizes how much he values his father and family, in general, and when Burt pulls through, Kurt appreciates what he has a lot more. Soon after, he and Rachel start to connect over their similarities. Then things get... Well, dangerous.
A football player named Dave Karofsky begins to bully Kurt - physically and verbally - on a regular basis. Will's attempts to help are... A bit off, and lead to Kurt getting hurt by the other boys in the glee club as they dismiss his ideas and tell him to go spy on the Warblers, a rival glee club. There, he meets Blaine Anderson, starting a love story for the ages. Or... Something like that. But really, the significance here is Kurt not only falling quickly for Blaine and seeing a talented glee club in action, but learning that the school of the Warblers - Dalton Academy - has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to bullying.
Blaine goes on to instill courage in Kurt, to the point where the word becomes his mantra, and inspires him to stand up to Dave, following him into the boys' locker room to call him out on his bullying. What ends up happening, however, is Dave forcefully taking Kurt's first real kiss. When Kurt and Blaine try to help Dave come to terms with his sexuality, he gets angrier. Eventually, Dave threatens to kill Kurt if he tells anyone about the kiss.
Things lighten up briefly when his dad announces his marriage to Finn's mom, and Kurt gets to plan the wedding. In fact, Dave is even suspended when Sue, who is temporarily principal, finds out about the death threat. However, after the wedding, the school board overrides Sue's suspension of Dave, so Kurt's parents offer up their honeymoon money to send Kurt to Dalton Academy. He transfers.
Kurt takes a bit of a backseat for a while in the show, now being the New Directions' competition. He struggles with fitting in at a school where status quo is kind of about blending in, and even more so with his feelings for Blaine. Valentine's Day and a misunderstanding about Blaine confessing feelings for someone leads to particular heartbreak, but the two do seem to be on the road to a relationship. Indeed, soon after Blaine kisses Rachel and feels it confirms that he is gay, Blaine realizes he has romantic feelings for Kurt, and the two begin to date. Not long after, thanks to some Santana plotting, Kurt is able to safely return to McKinley High School.
As season two continues, we see a really charitable side to Kurt, as he helps support Sam after the boy's dad loses his job, and helping Sue deal with the loss of her sister. We also see his courage grow even more. When he is voted Junior Prom Queen as a prank, he comes to terms with the fact that bullying is something he has to deal with right now, but he will not let it change who he is. He gets to join the New Directions, (as he has re-joined the group), at Nationals in New York, but ultimately the club is once again defeated.
Season three takes us to Kurt's senior year, with he and Rachel having plans to audition to the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts, and Kurt running for senior class president, showing his ability to take initiative to make the changes he wants to happen, happen. He is shown to be insecure in his sex appeal in the episode The First Time, but this is eased after he and Blaine have sex.
But before long, Dave is back in the picture. This time, though, it's in a very different way, as the two have made relative peace after Kurt's return to McKinley. Dave confesses his love for Kurt, but is caught doing so by a schoolmate at Dave's new school, for Dave transfered after being outed at McKinley. He (Dave) attempts suicide but is found in time to survive, and Kurt goes to visit him in the hospital, helping him feel a bit better.
With issues with Dave finally settled, it's time for Kurt's audition for the New York Academy of Dramatic Arts (NYADA). Kurt pulls of a last-minute switch from "The Music of the Night" to "Not the Boy Next Door", but ultimately does not get in, making his graduation from McKinley a bittersweet one. On a brighter note, the New Directions finally win all the way in Nationals that year.
Finally, we have Season Four. Kurt starts off stuck in Lima, but is convinced by Blaine to go to New York City, where he finds an apartment with Rachel and an internship at Vogue's website. Kurt enjoys the internship very much, leading him to contemplate his dreams moving from Broadway to the fashion industry. Unfortunately, it also leads to him ignoring Blaine, and in a desperate state, Blaine cheats on him. When he confesses this to Kurt, the two have a break-up. Later, Kurt is seen assuring a co-worker at Vogue that he will be okay.
ABILITIES: The boy can sing.
